You can watch Australian TV channels online outside Australia for free without a paid cable or pay-TV contract. Australia's national public broadcaster ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) and major commercial networks broadcast continuous news feeds and lifestyle channels that are accessible to international audiences. You can stream ABC News Australia and Nine Network's 9Gem directly in your browser on whichTV.
What Channels Make Up Australian Television?
Television in Australia is defined by two national public broadcasters (ABC and SBS) alongside three major commercial television networks: Seven Network, Nine Network, and Network 10. For the millions of Australians living abroad in the UK, North America, New Zealand, or Southeast Asia, following Australian national debates, federal elections, and cultural events is essential:
- ABC News (24-hour channel): Australia's premier continuous news network, producing breaking news from Sydney, Melbourne, and regional bureaus across the Pacific. Programs include The World, Insiders, and daily question time from Parliament House in Canberra.
- Commercial Digital Multi-Channels: Networks like Nine operate specialty free-to-air digital channels such as 9Gem, focusing on classic British comedies, drama series, and lifestyle content.
- SBS (Special Broadcasting Service): Australia's multicultural broadcaster, delivering news in dozens of community languages and in-depth global documentaries.

What Can You Watch Free Abroad vs Domestic Blocks?
Due to geographic licensing agreements, certain types of Australian content cannot be broadcast globally:
| Content Type | Example Shows / Feeds | Availability Overseas |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous National News | ABC News channel, 24/7 bulletins | Widely available worldwide without geoblocking |
| Parliamentary & Public Affairs | Canberra Question Time, National Press Club | Freely accessible on public streams |
| AFL & NRL Matches | Australian football, Rugby League | Strictly restricted abroad due to lucrative international rights |
| Imported Drama & Movies | US/UK drama acquisitions on Seven/Nine/10 | Geoblocked; networks only hold Australian rights |
If you tune in expecting live AFL Premiership matches or international cricket, you will almost certainly find the broadcast blacked out. To learn more about how sporting restrictions operate globally, see our guide on why live sports channels are geo-blocked.
How to Get the Best Streaming Performance
Because Australian broadcast servers are located thousands of miles away from viewers in Europe and the Americas, latency and packet transit times can occasionally impact video smoothness:
- Optimize Your Playback: If you experience buffering due to long transatlantic or transpacific network hops, read our troubleshooting tips on how to fix live TV buffering.
- Watch on Your Television: For living room viewing with family, learn how to cast live TV to your Chromecast or Smart TV.
